‘ Founded in 1962, ‘l-orizzont’ has since become the leading daily newspaper in the Maltese language. Since its early days ‘l-orizzont’ has been a pioneer in Maltese journalism. Its thorough reporting of notorious events during the 1960s made ‘l-orizzont’ a household name almost instantly. Today it is still very much sought after for its detailed reporting and exclusive news stories.

Like its sister paper ‘it-TORCA’, ‘l-orizzont’ is a family oriented newspaper, providing not only local and foreign news, news analysis and opinion leaders, but also sports, entertainment, games and more.

‘l-orizzont’ is currently passing through very exciting times since new blood in its editorial staff has instilled a flair for experimentation with new ideas, very much reminiscent of the restless young journalists that gave birth to the newspaper and went on to make it a leader in Maltese journalism.

Over the years ‘l-orizzont’ has made many of Malta’s top journalists and has been a winner in many competitions. However, the newspaper’s greater contribution to Maltese society has been its constant commitment towards promoting social justice, sometimes even leading campaigns of its own, such as when it campaigned against Toni Patinott’s death sentence and had it commuted to life imprisonment. Such a commitment has indeed made ‘l-orizzont’ an integral part of Malta’s recent history; a presence that today’s editorial team wants to keep also in the future.

‘ Established in 1944 as a bilingual weekly paper to serve as the voice of the newly founded General Workers’ Union, ’The Torch’ changed its name in 1959 to it-TORCA. Today, ‘it-TORCA’ has become an institution of Maltese journalism.

It is the longest running Sunday paper in Maltese, having celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2009. ‘It-TORCA’ is the best selling newspaper in the Maltese language and its nationwide circulation is second only to the Sunday Times.

Over the years, ‘it-TORCA’ has become renowned for setting standards in journalism. Renowned journalists and editors have worked on ‘it-TORCA’ during the years providing to the public countless exclusive stories and reports. Contributors of standing, from local political leaders, artists and activists to international figures, like US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, have reached out to the Maltese public from the pages of ‘it-TORCA’. Since its inception, ‘it-TORCA’ has provided space for new literary talent and its pages have frequently been the arena of cultural debate in Malta.

The current editorial team of ‘it-TORCA’ is made up of a small hard working nucleus; an ideal blend of talent, experience and youthful resourcefulness. Whilst keeping continuity with tradition, the ‘it-TORCA’ offices are laboratories for new ideas and journalistic innovation. Such efforts have been acclaimed by juries in local and international competitions. ‘It-TORCA’ is also socially committed and has been particularly active in the fields of human and workers’ rights. Such commitment has been commended by various international institutions such as Amnesty International, UNHCR and the European Commission.
